China’s renewable-energy expansion has pushed coal-fired generation below half of the country’s electricity output for the first time, as Beijing moves to deepen climate-adaptation trials in 39 cities ahead of the U.N. climate summit next month.

Coal-fired power accounted for 49.7% of China’s total electricity generation in the first half of 2026, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment said in its annual report on the country’s climate policies. By the end of July, installed solar capacity had surpassed coal power capacity, making photovoltaics China’s largest source of installed generation capacity.
